Firefox hanging on startup today?

Snail

Another thing I dislike: when computers make people wait for them.

[If you do not use the Firefox browser, this won't be interesting to you]

The SwitchProxy extension, if you have it installed, does an automatic update check when Firefox starts up.

That’s fine, except it is apparently done on the main startup thread or something, because it blocks Firefox completely until it finishes. That’s pretty bad when, as today, the SwitchProxy website is timing out. Firefox is effectively paralyzed for several minutes after you start it up.

Solution: Tools -> SwitchProxy -> Preferences, uncheck “Notify me of updates.”

Whoops. Jeremy, you’ll want to fix that! :)

My Firefox has been seriously hanging on startup the last two days (02/17 and 02/18), and this was the problem. Thanks. Incidentally, to get to the point where you can disable the update notifications on Windows XP: disable your NIC, open Firefox, turn off update notifications in SwitchProxy, and reenable your NIC.

Great info, thanks for that. I just had the same problem.

Mike: There’s another way to switch off the SwitchProxy notification. Just enter “about:config” in the URL edit field, then enter “switch” in the Filter field. Find the “switchproxy.update.notify” setting and set it to “false” (just double-clicking it will do).
